Helpful Money Saving Information
SENIOR DISCOUNTS

As I was waiting in line behind an older gentleman at Wendy's recently, I heard him ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over 55 get 10% off everything on the menu, every day.

Being that age myself, I figured I might as well ask for the discount too. As I waited for my turn, I thought about the consequences of doing so. If the employee asked me for I.D., it could be embarrassing having to show my license. But if she didn't ask for proof, I would get depressed that I really did look "old" and that I didn't need to prove it. Since I always like to save money, I boldly asked for the discount, and sadly she just rang up the discount (even though I am convinced I don't look a day over 54).

Anyway, this incident prompted me to do some research, and I came across a list of restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals and other types of offers giving various discounts with different age requirements. I was actually surprised to see how many there are and how some of them start at the young age of 50.

This list may not only be useful for you, your friends and family, but it might also be appreciated by your clients. You might consider sending them an e-mail about it and link to our site in the e-mail.

Dunkin Donuts gives free coffee to people over 55. If you're paying for a cup every day, you might want to start getting it for free.

Good ways to save money & keep your credit score up

1)   Always pay something on your credit cards, even if it's only $10.  This keeps you in good standing with the company and your credit score will not be affected because you will be showing "intent" to pay.  Also if you miss 3 consecutive months of not paying anything on a credit card bill it automatically affects your credit score and your score drops.

2)   If you pay 1 extra payment on your home mortgage and note on your payment that it is for "principal only" you will knock quite a number of years off your payments.  Lowering the principal also lowers the interest you pay.  Also if you pay 1/2 your monthly mortgage payment then 2 weeks later pay the other half (on time) you can also lower your interest and pay your mortgage off earlier.

3)   When you use grocery coupons or catch grocery sales it sometimes shows on your check out receipt ... "you saved $____".  Take that amount of money and put it away where you can't touch it.  Open a non-interest baring savings account with a company that doesn't "fee" you to death, and put the money in once a month.  You'll be surprised how much you can save in a year.

4)  Whenever you break a bill paying for shopping items etc. - drop the change in the bottom of your purse or in your pocket instead of your wallet and don't use it.  When you get home, take the change from pocket or purse and drop it in a jar and don't touch it. It really adds up. Open a non-interest baring savings account with a company that doesn't "fee" you to death, and put the money in once a month.  You'll be surprised how much you can save in a year.

5)  If you  are trying to invest in a stock portfolio, talk to your friends and see what products they use all the time and make a list of the ones that everyone uses, including yourself.  Those are the stocks that you should consider.  Everybody uses toilet paper, soap, toothpaste etc.

6)  Save ALL of your receipts that reflect "sales tax" - sales tax is deductible on your Schedule A - Federal Tax return.

7)   Start a Home Business, find something you really like to do, make, say or whatever you are just good at and see if you can make a business of it.  Special occasion baskets, Cupcakes & Cookies, Bookkeeping, Special occasion handmade cards,  etc. - with a home business you can take several deductions on your yearly income tax filing.  Try something that has a low to no start up cost. You don't have to make a boat load of money, unless that's what you want to do, you can just make enough to make ends meet and have a little cushion to fall back on.

A sealed envelope - Put in the freezer for a few hours, then slide a knife under the flap.  The envelope can then be resealed.

Use empty toilet paper rolls to store appliance cords.  It keeps them neat and you can write on the roll what appliance it belongs to.

For icy door steps in freezing temperatures;  get warm water and put Dawn dish washing liquid in it.  Pour it all over the steps.  They won't refreeze.

To remove old wax from a glass candle holder, put it in the freezer for a few hours. then take the candle holder out and turn it upside down.  The wax will fall out.

Crayon marks on walls? Take a damp rag dipped in baking soda and wipe it right off with little effort.

Permanent marker on appliances/counter tops (like store receipt BLUE) us rubbing alcohol on a paper towel to remove.

When you purchase a box of S.O.S. Pads, take a pair of scissors and cut the pads in halves.  That way you don't have a big rusted and smelly pad to deal with and it's more economical.  Now the pads will last twice as long.  In fact, you'll notice that your scissors get 'sharpened' this way.

Blood stains on clothes?  Not to worry!  Just pour a little hydrogen peroxide on a cloth and proceed to wipe off every drop of blood.

To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a paper bag and add the flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt and leave your artificial flowers looking like new!  Works like a charm.

To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to a boil on the stove top.

Spray your plastic food containers with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato based sauces ad there won't be any stains.

Wrap celery in Aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks.

When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring out the corn's natural sweetness.

Cure for headaches;  Take a lime, cut it in half, and rub it on your forehead.  The throbbing will go away.

Don't throw out all the leftover wind;  Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces.

To get rid of itch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the area and you will experience instant relief.

Ants, ants, ants everywhere ... Well, they are said to never cross a chalk line.  So, get your chalk out and draw a ling on the floor or where ants tend to march.  See for yourself.

Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still, leaves a lovely smell to the shine.

When you get a splinter, grab the scotch tape before you reach for the tweezers or a needle.  Simply put the scotch tape over the splinter and then pull it off.  Scotch tape removes most splinters painlessly and easily.

YOUR DEBIT & CREDIT CARD AT THE GAS PUMP

Using credit/debit card?  Read this note carefully.  I didn’t know
about the ‘clear button’, but I will be pushing the ‘clear button’ before I
swipe my gas or debit card…. AND AFTER…..just to be safe.

People are getting desperate due to the economy and constantly rising gas
prices.  A friend just told me about something that happened to one of
his coworkers.

She had used her credit/debit card to purchase gas at the pump (like most of
us do).  She received her receipt like normal.

However, when she checked her statement, there were (2) $50.00 charges added
in addition to her purchase!  Upon investigation, she found out, that
because she had not pressed the ‘clear’ button on the pump, the employee inside the store was able to use her card to purchase his/her own gas! (How nice.)

To keep this from happening to you, after you get your receipt, you must press
the ‘CLEAR’ button, or your information will be stored until the next
customer inserts their card.

Be sure to tell all your friends/family so that this doesn’t happen to them!

I had never noticed the ‘clear button’, but I got gas the other day and
sure enough…there it is!   I shall be using it from now on.
